Austin EcoSchoolinspired learning

I have lived in Austin since 1988. Originally trained as an analytical chemist (graduated magna cum laude BS Biology/chemistry minor), I became drawn to education, with the birth of our daughter, Clementina, in 1998.

I have participated in and helped create several childcare cooperatives in South Austin, and just prior to my work at Austin EcoSchool, I taught the Pre-K class for the Collaborative Learning Academic Program (CLAP), a secular homeschool coop in Central Austin. I have also taught at Starbright Preschool, a Waldorf-oriented NEAYC accredited PreK program, and mentored with their director, Jean Dordek, MaED, for three years as lead teacher in their 3-5 year old classroom.

At Austin EcoSchool, I am privileged to guide students at their own pace through the inter-related disciplines of mathematics, science, cooking/baking and gardening/nature. Where I can, I add story telling, singing and music, Spanish language and art using various media. I lead a role playing game (RPG) unique to Austin EcoSchool, where the children and I explore elements of world history. The game allows children to create personae to explore an era fully and to establish a working knowledge of the social, economic and historical contexts of each time period.

I borrow from various educational philosophies to create a gentle and peaceful classroom experience, rich in experiential learning, art and music, and respect for self, for peers and for nature. My goals are to culture positive energy and channel enthusiasm so the children may have a safe and magical experience as they explore their world. I believe that every child learns best when allowed to explore at self-determined pace and in an individual manner. I also believe that education is not an end, but a journey.

I have been married to my cherished life partner, Alan, since 1993. He has been my inspiration and source of unstinting support in this, my own journey.
